Firemen Marked Akron's 50th Birthday
Akron had no official celebration to mark its 50th birthday in 1875 but its volunteer firefighters made the most of the occasion. They staged the ninth and last of their annual parades and contests with out-of-town volunteer units. The Eagle Hose Co. erected these arches on E. Market street. From 1867 to 1875 the firemen's days were the high spots on teh city's social calendar. |
