horses and shiny equipment. At left is a 500-gallon Button

The No. 2 Engine House
pictured in 1899, stood on the site of the present station
on East Exchange Street at Market. Still seen there is the
fountain with its two children under an umbrella.

Academy of Music Fire
One of the
most spectacular fires in Akron's history struck the city's
opera house and teh Academy of Music, on Sunday July, 18, 1897.
Hundreds of Akronites who were on their way to church stopped to
watch firemen battle the blaze at Main and Market streets. S.T.
Everett rebuilt the structure as an office building.

Firemen Marked Akron's
50th Birthday
Akron had no
official celebration to mark its 50th birthday in 1875 but its
volunteer firefighters made the most of the occasion. They
staged the ninth and last of their annual parades and contests
with out-of-town volunteer units. The Eagle Hose Co. erected
these arches on E. Market street. From 1867 to 1875 the
firemen's days were the high spots on teh city's social
calendar.

Bulding on West Market Street at the Ohio Canal was completely
destroyed on May 18, 1909.
