Summit County's first courthouse was completed in 1843, three
years after the county's formation. Between 1905 and 1908, a new
courthouse was built on the original site. In 1924 an annex
immediately to the east of the courthouse was competed. The photo
above was taken shortly after completion of the annex. To the
right of the courthouse is the rear of the county jail.

The county's second infirmary (poor house) was erected in 1864-65
on the south side of W. Exchange Street at Storer Avenue. Built of
brick that was made on the grounds by pauper labor, it replaced a
frame building at W. Market and Portage path that had been in use
since 1849. The new infirmary cost about $20,000 and was used
until replaced in 1921 by the Summit County Home in Tallmadge.
